$13 a pack? NYC mayor wants highest cigarette prices in US

No one will say that smoking tobacco is healthy. Currently, there are around 9,000 licensed tobacco product sellers in New York City and astonishingly, around a third of them are located within 500 feet from a school.

The Democratic mayor on Wednesday announced his support for a series of legislative proposals created to drastically cut tobacco use in the city by the year 2020.

This month, California, which accounts for more than a tenth of the tobacco industry's sales, raised cigarette taxes by $2 per pack.

The proposal also includes the city's first-ever 10 percent tax on other tobacco products.

That means that each cigar sold in New York City would have an additional 20 cents of tax added onto the cost, in addition to the state's rate of 28.5 percent of the wholesale price.

A federal excise tax increase, which would have a greater impact on consumption, isn't imminent given the Trump administration's push to reduce taxes and cut regulation, Jeffrey Burger, who co-manages the Dreyfus High Yield Municipal Bond fund, has said. He also asserted that 174,000 adults and 42,000 adolescents use e-cigarettes.

Bill de Blasio, Mayor of New York City, announced a five-pronged package of proposed bills, which among other aspects, advocates that the base price of a pack of cigarettes be increased to $13.

The North Shore had the highest rate of current smokers of all citywide community districts, according to 2015 surveys conducted by the Health Department.

It already is the city that never sleeps - and if Mayor Bill de Blasio has his way it will become the city that never smokes.

One of the bills would also make it illegal for 550 pharmacies and stores that contain retail pharmacies to sell tobacco products.

Cheyenne Alexander of the Bronx said she wasn't concerned about the mayor's initiative because she is going to quit smoking, but added that she pays $8 a pack for cigarettes.

While no current dealers will lose their license, new licenses wouldn't be issued until the total decreases below the cap. The proposal recommends that all residential building in NY develop a smoking policy.
