49ers land Garry Gilliam after Seahawks refuse to match offer

The Seattle Seahawks reportedly will not match the San Francisco 49ers' offer sheet to offensive tackle Garry Gilliam.

The Seahawks have five days to either match the contract or let Gilliam, 26, go to their division rival. Because the Seahawks tendered Gilliam at the lowest level, they will not receive any draft pick compensation from the 49ers, who had signed Gilliam to the offer sheet on Monday. Seattle had tendered him a minimum one-year, $1.8 million deal.

The 49ers have been looking for depth behind starting tackles Joe Staley and Trent Brown.

But when Sowell struggled, Gilliam returned to the starting lineup for the final two regular season games as well as both playoff games. Brown has more talent, but Gilliam might be a better scheme fit.

Clouser said Gilliam did not want to sign away potential years in unrestricted free agency and wanted to become an unrestricted free agent in 2017. Theus remains with the club after getting playing time late last season when the offensive line dealt with injuries at a number of positions.

With Gilliam out of the picture, the Seahawks will have to rework an already questionable line. He also has played guard.

With Gilliam in the fold, the Seattle Seahawks ranked 25th in the National Football Leagu (NFL) in rushing last season and allowed the sixth-most sacks.

One recent mock draft, in fact, has the 49ers selecting Alabama standout offensive tackle Cam Robinson - if they can trade down from the No. 2 overall selection.
