Apple Gets DMV Approval to Test Self-Driving Cars in California

(Adds share price) By Jessica Resnick-Ault April 14 (Reuters) - Apple Inc has secured a permit to test autonomous vehicles in California, fueling speculation that it is working on self-driving auto technology in a crowded arena of companies hoping to offer those cars to the masses.

Late past year, Apple revealed it is investing heavily in autonomous vehicles in a letter asking the government to make it easier to develop self-driving cars. This is the first time Apple has received approval to test its technology on public streets. Apple has become the 30th company to be granted a testing permit.

According to Business Insider, a new entry on California's DMV website indicates that Apple was recently granted a permit that gives it permission to test drive autonomous vehicles on public roads.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple's permit covers three 2015 Lexus SUVs and six different drivers who must sit behind the wheel to monitor the driving and takeover when needed.

For years, annual iPhone rumors have been forced to compete with similarly hyped whisperings regarding the possibility of an Apple self-driving auto.

He expects the firm is creating a safe and effective autonomous-driving system based on computer vision, laser-based navigation and mapping, while also building an in-car environment for passengers that leverages Apple's dominant position in entertainment and workspace technology. Tesla and GM have more than 20 autonomous testing vehicles on California's roads.

Apple continues to develop technology related to self-driving vehicles.

Despite the permit, it's still unclear what specific aspect Apple is working on.

Self-driving cars could also be a lucrative new market. That began to change in December, when the company wrote a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration saying that it was "investing heavily" in machine learning to support autonomous systems, especially in transportation.

Apple's automotive research project has been under way for more than two years, but it is unclear how soon any product will emerge.
