Australia take command against United States in Davis Cup tie

FRANCE'S POUILLE TAKES DAVIS CUP OPENER AGAINST BRITAIN: Lucas Pouille gave hosts France a winning start in their Davis Cup quarter-final against Great Britain on Friday with a 7-5, 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 victory over Kyle Edmund.

United States pair Steve Johnson and Jack Sock kept the Davis Cup quarter-final against Australia alive with a gritty five-set win over John Peers and Sam Groth in Brisbane on Saturday. "I think everyone could see that he stopped looking for his forehand", Thompson said.

Johnson was shaky in his service game at 2-3, which the Australians won with a forehand return victor by Groth, and Sock was broken to tie the match up at two sets each when Peers produced consecutive winners.

The victor of the quarter-final will face either Belgium or Italy in September's semis.

“Wearing the green and gold, theres no greater honour, ” Thompson said. "Im really proud of both boys, but theres still a bloody long way to go".

Quarterfinals: At Brisbane: Australia 2 leads U.S. 0 [Jordan Thompson bt Jack Sock 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4; Nick Kyrgios bt John Isner 7-5, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5)].

Thompson won both his two singles matches on debut against the Czech Republic in Australia's February tie, but with a No.79 ranking sits 64 places beneath Sock on the ATP standings.

USA captain Jim Courier said his team was capable of winning both matches Sunday and reaching the semi-finals.

Sock, who has played 5hr 34min of tennis in two days, is scheduled to play Kyrgios first-up, with John Isner to take on Thompson in the fifth and final match. The visitors have Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson listed to play Sam Groth and John Peers but that can all change until an hour before play.

"I'm pretty happy with the guy I've got on the other side of the net".

Isner has a 2-1 record against Kyrgios after beating the 21-year-old in their first two meetings at the Canadian and Madrid Masters tournaments in 2015 before losing in two tight sets in Atlanta last year.

Australian captain Lleyton Hewitt said building pressure on Isner would be the key to victory for Kyrgios. Playing only his second Davis Cup tie, Thompson, 22, went into the match against the American number one as the huge underdog.

Sydney-born Thompson upset Spaniard David Ferrer in the Brisbane International at the same venue earlier this year but Sock - who has been in stellar form this year - represents by far his biggest scalp to date.
