Bill O'Reilly taking a break amid sponsor backlash

Bill O'Reilly taking a break amid sponsor backlash

That represents a 28 percent increase in total viewers and 42 percent increase in the demo compared to the same period previous year.

Two highly placed Fox News sources say 21st Century Fox CEO James Murdoch would like O'Reilly to be permanently taken off the air, while his father, Rupert, and older brother, Lachlan, are more inclined to keep him.

On Tuesday night's episode of The O'Reilly Factor, the host announced that he was going on vacation -preplanned, of course, and not at all related to the sexual harassment settlements he's yet to acknowledge directly in public.

"Controversy is a breeding ground for interest", said Marc Berman, editor in chief of The Programming Insider.

"Just like other prominent and controversial people, I'm vulnerable to lawsuits from individuals who want me to pay them to avoid negative publicity", the statement read. "If the ratings were not up, I would have been surprised".

Sherman reported that Tuesday night's program could be O'Reilly's final hour as lawyers with the law firm Paul, Weiss, hired last summer to deal with sexual harassment allegations against ousted Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes, conduct a "deep dive" investigation into O'Reilly's behavior.

His vacation announcement comes as about 60 companies said they wont advertise on his show. "Post-revelation, paid commercial time bottomed out on April 7th at seven spots and 4:40 mm:ss before rebounding in the April 10th telecast to eleven spots and 7:20 mm:ss".

But O'Reilly has not been abandoned by his audience. Instead, Trump said he should have "taken it all the way", presumably in court.

Executives at Fox News will no doubt see whether the move gives the network some breathing room. "CBS This Morning" averaged 3.7 million viewers last week, only 354,000 fewer than NBC's "Today" show and 644,000 below ABC's "Good Morning America". I mean, the man would have to lose absolutely every single advertiser in the world in order for the network to can him, and even then I don't know if they would, because he still pulls in viewers.

The O'Reilly Factor has been the most-watched program in the cable news landscape for 14 years, recently clocking its highest-rated quarter ever. MSNBC had 1.6 million, U.S. had 1.56 million, HGTV had 1.39 million and TBS had 1.2 million.
