Braves beat Padres 5-2 on opening night at new stadium

Alex Avila added a two-run homer in the sixth for Detroit, which played its first night game of the season.

The Atlanta Braves officially started a new era for the franchise on Friday night, with their first game at SunTrust Park against the San Diego Padres. The Braves are playing their firs.

In taking advantage of a spiraling Blue Jays team off to its worst start in club history (1-9), the win was the Orioles' third straight overall and kept them in first place in the American League East.

As the Braves battled the San Diego Padres Friday night inside SunTrust Park, Braves fans who could not score tickets to the game milled around the Battery, the mixed-use development just outside the stadium.

Cordobo, taken in the winter-meeting draft, had a walk and an infield hit in his first start in left field. The Braves used the exhibition as a soft opening to work out kinks prior to Friday's festivities, and only two businesses were open then: Terrapin and First and Third Hot Dog and Sausage Shack.

"I obviously got here right when the gates opened".

The Braves tied it in the third with four hits.

The festivities kicked off with a "welcome home" featuring several of the Braves' stars from yesteryear, including Hank Aaron, Bobby Cox, Tom Glavine, Chipper Jones, Dale Murphy, Phil Niekro and John Smoltz. After Freddie Freeman scorched a double to left-center to move Inciarte to third, Nick Markakis drove in the first run inside SunTrust with a double to right that brought home both Inciarte and Freeman as 41,149 fans shook their red foam tomahawks with approval at the 2-0 lead.

Julio Teheran (1-0) was a bit wild but lasted six innings.

Jim Johnson pitched through a one-out single in the ninth inning to record his second save in three chances for the Braves after Jose Ramirez and Arodys Vizcaino each pitched a ideal inning. Attending the new, modern ballpark is a better experience, he said. "I went up there and said, 'You know what, I'm going to try to hit this ball as far as I can, ' and the next thing you know I did".

"It's not the easiest pick in the world for Wil", manager Andy Green said, "but he usually comes up with that".

"It looks like they took a lot of parts from a lot of parks and them together", he said.

Padres: RHP Trevor Cahill (back) is on track to return from the 10-day disabled list on Sunday. The Braves recalled RHP Luke Jackson from Triple-A Gwinnett and optioned RHP Jason Hursh to the same team. Manager Brian Snitker said the hard-throwing right-hander is "feeling great and ready to go", but no word when he'll come off the DL.

The 29-year-old Cahill missed his last scheduled start as the result of a lingering lower back issue.

San Diego Padres' Austin Hedges (18) celebrates after hitting a two-run home run in the second inning of a baseball game against the Atlanta Braves, Saturday, April 15, 2017, in Atlanta. For his big league career, Cahill now owns a 4.04 ERA over the course of 263 regular season appearances, 175 starts and 1,155 innings of work in all. He was a member of Team USA in the 1996 Summer Olympics at Fulton County Stadium before pitching in the majors at Turner Field.

"I really hope we get this energy every single game", Inciarte said.
