Dozens injured as Kashmir students clash with police

Kashmir government snapped mobile Internet services across Kashmir on Monday afternoon as student protested across the Valley following the thrashing of students of Pulwama Degree College by government forces last week.

The trouble started when a group of students took out a rally near Sri Pratap (SP) College on Moulana Azad Road in the vicinity of Lal Chowk against the Pulwama incident, leading to clashes between the protesting students and the law enforcing agencies, the officials said.

Police said they were maintaining "extreme restraint" while dealing with the student protests. Several police and other security personnel were also injured in stone-pelting by students in Srinagar and elsewhere, officials said.

CPI (M) leader and MLA Kulgam, M Y Tarigami while condemning the use of force against students said the "present government has become reckless and is not ready to read the writing on the wall". "The injured were hit by pellets and teargas shells", the official told Greater Kashmir.

Former Chief Minister and National Conference's working president Omar Abdullah on Monday said that the prevailing situation is deeply worrying. Fearing fresh protests by the agitating students, the authorities had announced the shutdown of Pulwama college for two days. "Is Mehbooba not alert to the situation".

Controversy peaked when a video showing a man tied to an army jeep in Budgam district of central Kashmir on April 9 surfaced when polling was underway for the Srinagar Parliamentary bypoll.

"Three were referred to Srinagar for specialised treatment".

Bashir Ahmad Dar, a resident of Qasba Yaar Rajpora Pulwama who runs a medical shop in his village was taken to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The police had also said that it wants to clarify that no raids were conducted and the video being shared on social networking sites is not from Pulwama.

In occupied Kashmir, over hundred male and female students and a journalist were injured, today, in Indian forces' actions on thousands of students, who took to the streets in nearly all educational institutions across the territory.

Residents said security forces shot Sajad Hussain Sheikh, 17, in the head after their armoured vehicles were pelted with stones in the Batamaloo area of Srinagar, capital of the disputed Himalayan region.
