Ex-NFL star Aaron Hernandez hangs himself in his prison cell

Ex-NFL star Aaron Hernandez hangs himself in his prison cell

Hernandez was serving a life sentence at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Facility in Shirley after being convicted of the murder of Odin Lloyd in 2015. From a promising athlete to a convicted murderer, this is the story of Aaron's tragic fall from grace.

Hernandez's defense attorney Jose Baez, however, believes that his client may not have committed suicide at all, according to TMZ.

In a maximum-security prison outside Boston, about an hour from the stadium where he played alongside stars such as Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski, Hernandez jammed the door to his one-man cell lest guards try to stop him and put an early end to the life-without-parole sentence he received for a 2013 murder.

In an e-mail to the Boston Globe, New England Patriots spokesman Stacey James wrote that the team was aware of the death of their former player, "but I don't anticipate that we will be commenting today", he wrote.

"The Massachusetts State Police are on scene and the investigation continues".

He immediately proved himself a major asset to the Patriots, catching six passes for 101 yards in a game against the New York Jets in Week 2 of the 2010 season.

A prison spokesman told the Boston Globe that Hernandez had not been on a suicide watch and did not indicate that he meant to harm himself.

Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Communications Christopher Fallon also says Wednesday that officials had no concern that Hernandez was planning on taking his own life. Aaron blew kisses and waved at the four-year-old as she waved back and cried.

Hernandez was acquitted Friday in the 2012 double murder that prosecutors said was fuelled by his anger over a spilled drink.

"Mr. Hernandez was in a single cell ina general population unit", the department said in a statement.

Hernandez was found hanging in his cell at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Massachusetts at approximately 3.05 a.m., the department said in a statement. Mr. Hernandez hanged himself utilizing a bed sheet that he attached to his cell window.

Authorities tried to revive the former New England Patriots tight end, and he was pronounced dead at UMass Memorial - HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster at 4:07am.
