Fitbit delays launch of Global Positioning System smartwatch and wireless headphones until autumn

Shares of fitness wearables pioneer Fitbit (FIT) are down 19 cents, or 3%, at $5.58, following a report this afternoon by Yahoo Finance's J.P. Mangalindan stating that the company has been having difficulties with the fabrication of its next smart watch product, including issues getting the Global Positioning System hardware working properly, citing multiple unnamed sources.

Yahoo Finance has reported two key issues for the said delay: firstly, the smartwatch's Global Positioning System hardware wasn't working in the final prototype unit because of misplaced antennae, and secondly, there was trouble making the smartwatch waterproof. This particular problem forced the company to go back to the drawing board and redesign the entire smartwatch just so that the Global Positioning System received a strong signal.

"In one of the more final prototypes, the Global Positioning System wasn't working because the antennae wasn't in the right place", one of those sources told Yahoo Finance.

So far, the closest Fitbit has come to building a smartwatch is its Blaze activity tracker. The Fitbit earphones "will hang around your neck" and launch alongside the new smartwatch in two colors called "Nightfall Blue" and "Lunar Gray". After the takeover of two smartwatch making companies and its own CEO confirming it, Fitbit is on track of releasing a real smartwatch this year.

It was very retro-looking with the lines and stuff - definitely not sexy.

Fitbit was planning to release its first "proper" smartwatch but the project has been blighted by a series of production mishaps.

The company's design team also reportedly ran into a few problems when trying to make the device completely waterproof. Several employees who saw the design complained about it, the source said. "We don't have news to share at this time", she said.
