G-7 ministers seek unity in bid to press Russian Federation over Assad

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is due to travel to Moscow this week and the spokeswoman for May said the two leaders had agreed during their conversation that the visit was an opportunity to make progress towards a solution. Slack said he saw "no long term future" for Assad in Syria.

In a short speech Trump delivered Thursday evening, the visceral impact on him of the death toll from the chemical-weapons assault was clear.

It is also taking place amid an ongoing terror threat that was underscored by the Palm Sunday bombing of Coptic churches in Egypt claimed by the Islamic State group, and another truck attack on European soil, this time in Stockholm, on Friday.

He says of the recent chemical attack: "We can not let this happen again".

White House spokesman Sean Spicer suggested on Monday a lower bar for further US action, saying Washington could also retaliate if Syria uses "barrel bombs" - oil drums packed with explosives dropped from aircraft.

The US official gave his opinion during the G7 foreign ministers' meeting in Lucca, Italy, on Tuesday.

Ayrault didn't specify if Tillerson, who flew to Russian Federation right after the Italian meeting, responded to his comment.

The G-7 blames Assad's military for a deadly chemical attack last week. Lavrov said United States allegations that Syria carried out the chemical attack "do not correspond to reality".

The United States has made a preliminary conclusion that Russian Federation knew in advance of Syria's chemical weapons attack last week, but has no proof of Moscow's involvement, a senior US official said Monday.

Putin blamed the USA for aiding revolutions that toppled pro-Russian leaders in Ukraine and Georgia, and he blamed Hillary Clinton for inspiring Russian protesters when Putin was running for president in 2012.

Tillerson also said the cease-fire talks that Russian Federation and Iran have helped broker in the Kazakh capital, Astana, could generate momentum toward broader talks about a political transition - if the Astana talks succeed in creating a durable cease-fire.

The top USA diplomat and Sergei Lavrov will likely talk about what comes next for the two countries.

US Senator John McCain said stopping President Assad's "murderous rampage" does not preclude America from fighting the Islamic State group.

But before Tuesday's chemical attack on the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun, which killed 89 people, Haley had said toppling Assad was not a priority.

Following on from the Tillerson visit, Moscow has announced Lavrov will host three-way talks with his counterparts from Syria and Iran later this week.

Last week's nerve gas attack in the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun, which killed more than 80 people, stirred President Donald Trump - who was previously cool to the idea of US intervention - to strike for the first time at Assad's forces. The official said the U.S.is now convinced Russian Federation controlled the drone. "They are absent from this and are navigating aimlessly in the dark", said a senior European diplomat, who declined to be named.

"We remain united in using a wide array of foreign policy tools, including restrictive measures and sanctions, with the goal of persuading Russian Federation to return to a path of shared respect of those principles", the G7 statement read.

Thomas told reporters at the Pentagon that the increased emphasis on defensive measures to protect USA troops on the ground in Syria led to a slight and temporary decline in offensive us airstrikes against IS in Syria. Assad and Russian Federation have accused the US of supporting terrorist groups, who've staged atrocities to gain worldwide sympathy for their cause.
