General election 2017: PM says Tories are 'party of lower taxes'

The Conservatives are "a lower tax party", Theresa May has insisted, amid speculation her party may raise taxes if they win the general election.

The prime minister said voters should trust the Tories' record on keeping tax low as a row brewed over comments made by Philip Hammond that the party was considering scrapping its "tax lock" commitment.

Or the choice is a Labour Party whose natural instinct is to always raise taxes and if you need any evidence of that just look at that their former shadow chancellor said about Labour Party policy.

But after Labour accused the Tories of planning a "tax bombshell", party officials insisted they were still to decide whether to include the pledge in their manifesto.

The chancellor, who recently had to U-turn on a planned national insurance raise, said that the 2015 manifesto had constrained "the ability to manage the economy flexibly".

However, Mrs May told supporters: "At this election people are going to have a very clear choice".

Appearing at a campaign event in central England, May refused to say whether she could rule out higher taxes when asked three times by reporters.

"Theresa May should come clean on how she intends to fill the Brexit black hole if she won't increase taxes".

"Our tax burdens will not fall on those with low incomes". But Mr. Hammond hinted that he may seek more flexibility in meeting current deficit-reduction goals, saying existing commitments from the party's 2015 election manifesto are too restrictive.

The prime minister said the choice was also between "strong and stable leadership under a Conservative government" or a "weak and unstable coalition of chaos lead by Jeremy Corbyn".

"He's recognising he's got problems in the economy, he's got problems in the budgeting that he's done and as a result of that there will be tax rises under a Conservative government if they are re-elected. We will be fighting for every single vote".

The row came after Mrs May risked angering traditionalist Conservatives after she reaffirmed the Government's commitment to global aid spending while refusing to guarantee the "triple lock" for pensioners. "It does not seem to make good politics to me".
