Health officials: 2 confirmed measles cases in Mich.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says the case of measles was in an adult, and apparently the direct result of exposure to the state's first case of the measles this year, confirmed in late March in southeastern Michigan.

In Michigan, there was one case of measles identified in each 2015 and 2016 and five total cases in 2014. It says the two individuals are not related but both were passengers on the same flight when the first individual was contagious. "It's also so contagious that if you are in the same airspace as an individual who has the measles, that virus can live up to two hours in the airspace, so you can contract the disease that way as well". Measles can cause complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain).

Measles symptoms include rashes and white spots inside the cheeks, high fever, persistent cough and runny nose. Those symptoms are followed by a red, raised body rash starting on the head and face that spreads.

Anyone who ate at Mark's Midtown Coney Island on Plymouth Road or Benny's Family Dining on South Industrial last Thursday or Friday may have been exposed and should monitor themselves for symptoms for the next 21 days.

In 2000, measles was declared officially eradicated in the United States, but global travelers exposed in other countries can spark new infections here when they come in contact with someone who doesn't have immunity.

Measles is a viral infection deemed highly contagious.

Droplets from the nose or mouth, through sneezing, coughing or speaking, spread measles.

The measles vaccine is highly effective and very safe. However, health officials say national case counts have been rising.

"This underscores the importance of routine vaccination for both children and adults, and of making certain as many Michiganders as possible have protective immunity against measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases", said Dr. Eden Wells, chief medical executive for the state health department said. Nearly all measles cases in this country have occurred among the unvaccinated. In 2014, 667 people in the USA contracted measles, including five people in MI.

The two are not related to each other.

The department has more information about measles at its website.

People from Bay State may have been infected with measles due to European tourists.

The CDC reports reveal that an average of 60 measles cases have been reported yearly between 2001 and 2012.

"Measles is still common in many parts of the world, including some countries in Europe, Asia the Pacific and Africa", WCPH notes.

"Personally, I believe people should get vaccinated, especially now when there is so much travel between different countries and continents", Pichineru said.
