The authorities had shut the higher educational institutions as a precautionary measure in the wake of widespread violence by the students in Kashmir on Monday against the alleged high handedness of security forces with students in Pulwama on April 15.

"Students getting involved in the protests is alarming - we have repeatedly asking officials to address the issues in Kashmir before it's too late", Hurriyat spokesperson Shahid-ul-Islam told Mirror. The mob was dispersed and the normalcy was restored in the area.

An officer said the police were up against a determined lot of students.

Mehbooba Mufti's government today seemed to lose its writ for a while in the heart of Srinagar, where waves of stone-throwing students fought the forces just when she was discussing law and order with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. "The parents are requested to advise their wards not to indulge in stone pelting and other such activities which create disorder in the schools and on the roads", the police said.

"In a separate meeting with Rajnath Singh, chief minister also underlined the urgent need for initiating dialogue with all shades of opinion", a local government spokesman said.

The report suggests that pro-azadi and Islamist slogans were raised by the protesters while the police fired tear gas shells.

An eyewitness told the newspaper, "Some students also reached the gate of the women's college and from there targeted the security personnel".

Students wanted to protest against the atrocities inflicted on them allegedly by police during the recent unrest in the Valley.

Police said many students managed to come out of the school and college premises engaging in more intense clashes with the police.

Several groups of freedom fighters have for decades been fighting troops and police deployed on the Indian side of the divided region.

The students retaliated by hurling rocks and breaching the barricades set up by police and paramilitary soldiers.

Srinagar, The authorities on Monday ordered opening of universities, colleges and higher secondary schools in Jammu and Kashmir after a week's closure.

Students in Pulwama college were protesting against establishing a naka near the college main gate by security forces, who later burst teargas shells, fired pellets and resorted to lathicharge in which over 60 students were injured.

On April 20, Dar Yasin was documenting a protest by dozens of Kashmiri students who were confronting armed Indian government forces in riot gear.
