Jordan Montgomery: Montgomery takes no-decision in Major League Baseball debut

Keeping Tampa Bay off-balance with four pitches before tiring, Montgomery opened with strikeouts of Steven Souza Jr. and Kevin Kiermaier. The rookie southpaw arrived at Yankee Stadium at 9 a.m., drank a few cups of coffee, ate breakfast, and thought about "how awesome" his afternoon was going to be, making his major league debut against the Rays.

New York's Brett Gardner and Weeks both left the game after a collision at first base in the sixth inning.

Jordan Montgomery makes his big league debut in NY.

Montgomery was selected by the Yankees in the fourth round (No. 122 overall) of the 2014 MLB Draft.

"I thought he pitched out of jams really well", Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

"You get in this locker room, you get in this stadium, you're around all these guys, it's something I'll never forget", the 24-year-old Sumter, S.C., native said.

The two-run blast gave the Yankees a 8-3 lead.

To clear a 40-man roster spot for Montgomery, the Yankees designated RHP Johnny Barbato for assignment.

Cedeno faced two batters and did not record an out as he committed a throwing error and permitted a single to Ellsbury as the Yankees took a 4-3 lead. The Yankees made a decision to move Luis Severino back a day to give Montgomery the start after the 24-year-old pitched five innings of one-run, three-hit ball with Class A Tampa as a tune-up.

"He looks like someone who can help us for quite some time", general manager Brian Cashman said.

"I said your job is to score 100 runs", Girardi remembered telling Gardner.

Montgomery threw 61 of 89 pitches for strikes, including 17 missed swings. He dwelled not on the homer, but the walk after the Yankees' 8-4 victory.

The Yankees got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a bases loaded walk by Aaron Hicks, and a wild pitch during Matt Holliday's at-bat. The lefty impressed in his two starts, finishing spring with a 3.20 ERA that was third among pitchers who made at least one start (behind Tanaka and Green) before allowing only one unearned run over five innings last Thursday in what will be his final minor-league start for now.

"We've got to play cleaner games", Cash said.

Luis Severino had originally been slated to start on Wednesday, according to Adler, but his start will be pushed back a day.
