Lyon players forced to flee after Bastia supporters invade pitch

Before the match, dozens of Bastia fans invaded the pitch at their Armand Cesari stadium and attacked Lyon players as they warmed up for a French Ligue 1 game. However, after further chaos at half-time, the league's authoritative body, the LFP, has chose to put a stop to the game.

Former Lyon player Jeremy Berthod told the club's official TV station that Bastia fans threw balls at Mathieu Gorgelin's goal.

Lyon players left the field and initially refused to continue warmups, delaying the match until the league made it clear that it would be played no matter what. At 1816BST, they added: "Official, #SCBOL will not return!" Following the very serious incidents that occurred during the warm-up, the DDSP (Departmental Director of Public Security) had indeed made a decision to play the game but to stop it at the slightest incident.

"The LFP condemns in the strongest possible terms the incidents which occurred before the match and at the half-time of the match SC Bastia / Olympique Lyonnais".

That sparked an exchange with a Lyon player and more Bastia supporters from behind the goal quickly streamed onto the pitch.

Lyon's players had been finishing their pre-game warm-up when about 50 Bastia fans - many of them dressed in black - attacked them, an AFP reporter at the scene said. Memphis threw them back at them and has then been confronted by lots of Bastia supporters.

At halftime, several fans attacked Lopes as he headed for the dressing room, with the score at 0-0, and the game was called off 30 minutes after the second half was due to have begun.

"Still angry, none of them want to leave the changing room to play this game". Lyon is facing likely sanctions from UEFA after crowd disorder delayed its Europa League quarterfinal against Besiktas midweek.
