Man dead and three injured in 'targeted' shooting on Atlanta train

A MARTA spokesperson said the shooting happened on a train while it was traveling eastbound.

"As the train was in motion, the suspect fired several shots toward the victims", Joseph Dorsey, deputy chief of the MARTA police, said.

The West Lake station was closed just after 5 p.m.as police investigated the shooting.

"Everybody's sitting down. It's quiet", he recalled.

U.S. President Donald Trump said in January that Atlanta is "crime-infested" during a row with Democratic House Representative John Lewis, who represents Atlanta and its surrounding area.

A man who was in the train auto told Atlanta's Fox 5 television that a man wearing a hat sat next to another passenger, his head bobbing.

MARTA spokesman Burton said one man died at the scene. They were all taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The condition of the victims was unknown, it said. In addition to the three shot, one person injured in the panic was brought to the hospital, she said.

Beginning Friday, MARTA will increase the number of officers throughout the system, Dunham said.
