Montgomery impresses in debut as Yanks rally past Rays 8-4

NY wasn't expected to use a fifth starter until April 16, but Montgomery will be handed the ball earlier than expected because Joe Girardi wants to give Masahiro Tanaka and CC Sabathia an extra day of rest. Montgomery ended the day with a no decision as the Yankees went on to pick up an 8-4 win over the Rays. He scored on a wild pitch during an at-bat to Matt Holliday and lined the game-tying single off Jumbo Diaz (0-1) in the sixth when NY scored four runs. Gardner would later leave the game after a brutal collision with Rickie Weeks.

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Tim Beckham (1) leaps over New York Yankees Aaron Judge after tagging the second base bag for a force out on a bunt by Kyle Higashioka during the sixth inning of a baseball game, Wednesday, April 12, 2017, in New York. The lefty impressed in his two starts, finishing spring with a 3.20 ERA that was third among pitchers who made at least one start (behind Tanaka and Green) before allowing only one unearned run over five innings last Thursday in what will be his final minor-league start for now. The Yankees broke a 3-1 game open with a five-run eighth.

Weeks had hit his first home run of 2017 in the first inning, a two-run shot off Yankees lefty Jordan Montgomery, who was making his Major League Baseball debut.

After allowing the homer to Weeks in the first, Montgomery set down the Rays in order in the top of the second on a pair of fly balls and a grounder. The Rays' rotund righty started the sixth and back-to-back-to-back singles by Starlin Castro, Chase Headley, and Judge tied the game at 3-3. He bounced a hurried throw to first, and Gardner ran into Weeks. Judge homered in the eighth.

"It is important (Judge) continues to contribute", NY manager Joe Girardi told reporters.

"I said your job is to score 100 runs", Girardi remembered telling Gardner.

He took a ideal game into the seventh inning against Tampa Bay and his team won 8-1.

Yankees: 1B Greg Bird missed his fourth straight game. After being sidelined by a sore right ankle and a stomach ailment, he was benched against a left-handed starter. An interesting thing to look at for Pineda, who had allowed a.958 OPS to current Rays' batters coming into today's start, is that he has 17 strikeouts without a walk in 11 1/3 innings this season.

Giants 4, Diamondbacks 1: Giants catcher Buster Posey was doing well after being struck in the helmet by a 94 miles per hour fastball in the first inning and forced out of the game, a frightening moment in San Francisco's victory over Arizona in its home opener. Andriese matched his shortest start by going four innings for the third time since the start of last season.
