National Hockey League playoffs: Senators at Bruins Game 3

National Hockey League playoffs: Senators at Bruins Game 3

After only registering three shots on net in the first period, the Bruins found themselves down 3-0 just a few minutes into the second period after a power play goal from Ottawa's Mike Hoffman 3:42 into the period.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Ryan Getzlaf scored the tiebreaking power-play goal with 4:46 to play on a weird deflection off Lance Bouma's skate, and Anaheim took a 2-0 lead in their first-round playoff series. Each of Boston's two goals was the result of poor puck management by the Senators, who on both occasions tried and failed to clear the puck numerous times before Boston took advantage of some tired defenders. The series shifts to Boston for Games 3 and 4 on Monday and Wednesday.

Asked what his team needs to do in Game 4, Boston winger Brad Marchand, a 39-goal scorer in the regular season who scored the Game 1 victor before being blanked in the next two, said, "Definitely a better start".

Bruins fans in attendance for Game 3 against the Senators didn't get to see the result they were hoping for on Monday night, as Boston lost in overtime to Ottawa, 4-3. Cross had played three National Hockey League games during the 2015-16 season before playing in Game 3.

The thinking was that with hard-hitting Noel Acciari entering the series in Game 3 and the B's holding last change at home in Boston, things would get a lot more challenging for Karlsson. In less than 8 minutes, the Ottawa lead was gone and it was a brand new game once again. The big defenseman barely corralled a puck flying towards the blue line, sent a deflection off the pad of Tuukka Rask, and waited for a pass and some traffic to fire once more, beating Rask through the five hole.

Skating in alone against Rask, Hoffman bested the Bruins netminder with a quick set of dangles to make it a 1-0 game.

In Game 3 they had to stave off a furious charge by the Bruins to regain the series lead.

There would be no scoring in the third period, sending the game to overtime.

In overtime, on a night where the whistles were essentially put away late, Ottawa got a gift power play as the officials somehow seemed fit to call Riley Nash with the retaliation after a play where Ryan could have easily been whistled as well with coincidental minors, or even Ryan going off solo.

The Senators, after coughing up a three-goal lead in the second period, put all those bad memories behind them. They could easily be down 0-2 in this series but took advantage of defensive breakdowns by the Bruins to even things up.

The Bruins managed three shots on goal in the first and just one in the final 16:18 of the period, and neither side got off a shot in the last 9:47.

Backes scooped up the loose puck and broke in all alone on Anderson to score and cut the Ottawa lead to 3-2.

David Krejci returned for the Bruins after missing the first two games of the series with an upper-body injury.

Acciari, making his playoff debut, scored on a redirect at 6:05 to cut the deficit to 3-1. But the 19-year-old speedster with terrific instincts has looked extremely comfortable skating directly into the National Hockey League playoffs, having done so after playing a mere four games in Providence following his jump to the pro game from Boston University.

The Bruins were already down to their ninth defenceman on the depth chart as Joe Morrow was in for an injured Colin Miller. But one would expect now is the time to start forcing other Senators players, and more specifically their D-men, to beat you.
