Nevada community plans Drug Take Back Day

Nevada community plans Drug Take Back Day

As part of WCVB's '5 on: State of Addiction' public awareness effort, we are encouraging viewers to turn in unused prescription drugs on April 29! The service is free and anonymous with no questions asked. No liquids, please. According to Myers, the National Prescription Drug Take-Back event addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.

Last October, Americans turned in 366 tons (over 730,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at nearly 5,200 sites operated by the DEA and more than 4,000 of its state and local law enforcement partners. This Drug Take Back Box will be available to receive prescription drugs starting on Monday, May 1, 2017.

In addition to the take-back event partner agencies will have prescription drug handbooks for parents, and educational material on safeguarding prescription medications and proper methods of disposal of medications. Overall, in a span of 12 years, the DEA and law enforcement partners have collected a total of over 7.1 million pounds of pills. Prescriptions that sit in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, or abuse. Unused prescription medications in homes create a public health and safety concern, because they can be accidentally ingested, stolen, misused and abused.

Where to go The following locations in Windsor County will serve as drop-off sites on Take-Back Day, from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 29: Chester Police Department; Windsor Police Department; Weathersfield Transfer Station (operated by the Weathersfield Police Department); Springfield Police Department; Ludlow Police Department; Hartford Police Department; Woodstock Police Department; Royalton Police Department; Royalton State Police Barracks; Norwich Police Department; and Rochester Constable's Office. Additionally, the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs are also high. Studies show that many abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.
