Nitish calls on Sonia, urges unity

Barely a day before Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar had called on the Congress president in New Delhi and discussed certain issues.

JD (U) general secretary K C Tyagi refused to divulge much regarding the Nitish-Sonia meeting, saying that he was not present, but reiterated the party's stand that it strongly favours that Opposition parties put up a common Presidential nominee to contest against NDA's candidate.

Another senior JD (U) leader said Kumar's visit to Gandhi's residence was a courtesy call as the Congress is the party's ally in Bihar and also because Gandhi had been ill for some time. It was obsereved that the meeting was scheduled to unite the opposition over President Election that are to be held in July.

Kumar has in the past stressed on a grand alliance of opposition parties and said that Congress should take the initiative of bringing all major non-BJP parties on a single platform to defeat the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

While the NDA's thumping victory in Uttar Pradesh has boosted its position in the electoral college meant for picking the new President, the ruling coalition remains short of the half-way mark by around 21,000 votes. However, in the 2015 Bihar Assembly polls, the JD (U)-RJD-Congress alliance emerged as a success political story which in fact then had also shaken the BJP's leadership. "But again, it is subject to whether Mukherjee wants to continue as President".

"We thought there can be some common candidate. We don't have any formal proposal before us right now, but we welcome this suggestion", CPI general secretary S Sudhakar Reddy said. Before the CPI (M) general secretary met Mrs Gandhi, the Left parties, including the CPI (M) and CPI, had met among themselves and made a decision to go along with a joint Opposition presidential candidate.

Sources in the Opposition parties, however, say that no names have been zeroed in as of now as it is not yet clear how many parties will come on board. "A "mahagathbandhan" like this at the national level will be "maha safal" (a grand success)".
