North Korea missile launch fails: Seoul

The missiles were among one element of a massive, militaristic parade to mark the 1912 birthday of the regime's founder, Kim Il Sung.

Goose-stepping soldiers and marching bands filled the square, next to the Taedonggang River that flows through Pyongyang, in the hazy spring sunshine as tanks, multiple launch rocket systems and other weapons waited to parade.

Military planes flew in formation, creating the number "105" above Kim Il Sung Square.

Since taking power in late 2011, Kim Jong Un has executed or purged a slew of high-level government officials in what the South Korean government has described as a "reign of terror". China is North Korea's lone major ally but has spoken out against North Korea's missile and nuclear tests and supported United Nations sanctions.

Earlier this week US intelligence officials told NBC News the military was ready for a preemptive strike on North Korea if a nuclear test looks imminent.

"We saw a submarine launch ballistic missiles, we saw missiles that are capable of being launched from a mobile launcher and just seconds before we came on the air we saw these very large what are believed to be intercontinental ballistic missiles", Ripley said as jets tracked colors of the North Korean flag in the sky during the parade.

Its army vowed Friday a "merciless" response to any U.S. provocation but diplomats in Pyongyang are more sanguine, pointing out that the North raises its rhetoric every spring, when Washington and Seoul hold annual joint exercises that it views as preparations for invasion.

However North Korea refrained from a new test of a ballistic missile ahead of the holiday.

Another missile test from Sinpo failed earlier this month, when the rocket spun out of control and plunged into the ocean.

North Korea's vice foreign minister said the country's rumored next nuclear test would take place any time the leadership decides.

Kim Jong Un did not speak during the huge event, which celebrates the birthday of North Korea's founding ruler Kim Il Sung, but another top official, Choe Ryong Hae, warned that the North would stand up to any threat posed by the United States.

But that still wouldn't mean we're completely in the clear, as North Korea could move forward with nuclear weapons testing at any moment, particularly when the entire world isn't watching.

Putin will be asked to convince North Korea to calm down.

On Thursday, the North's state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said Kim watched from an observation post as special forces dropped from light transport planes "like hail" and "mercilessly blew up enemy targets". "An extremely grave situation is forming on the Korean Peninsula right now because of the rash military provocations and lunacy of the new Trump administration in the USA", the spokesperson for the General Staff Department of the Korean People's Army said in a statement released late in the afternoon of April. 14, the Korean Central News Agency reported.

The North has in turn warned of a nuclear strike against the United States if provoked.

Meanwhile, Vice President Pence will travel Sunday to South Korea.

Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis said in a statement: "The president and his military team are aware of North Korea's most recent unsuccessful missile launch".

The USS Carl Vinson supercarrier leaves a port in Busan, South Korea, March 20.

Last week, it emerged that a US Navy strike group has been sent into the Western Pacific, with Commander Dave Benham, spokesman at US Pacific Command, saying that it was a "prudent measure". Picture taken on April 9, 2017.

"It suggests a commitment to this programme", said Joshua Pollack, editor of the Washington-based Nonproliferation Review.
