North Korea rolls out missiles, other weaponry at parade

North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) has yet to mention anything about an ICBM at the parade.

Either way, the Pentagon confirmed they are preparing "military options" against North Korea, and haven't totally ruled out the possibility of a preemptive United States attack, though officials did deny that a decision to conduct such an attack has already been made.

The North's military parade Saturday prominently displayed submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM) for the first time, demonstrating its own increasingly advanced and diverse military capabilities.

Another missile test from Sinpo failed earlier this month, when the rocket spun out of control and plunged into the ocean.

Kim, a 30-something leader who took power in late 2011, emphasizes nuclear weapons as the foundation of his national defense strategy.

The show of strength comes amid mounting tension, with a U.S. aircraft carrier group steaming towards the region.

This year's joint war games between the US and South Korean militaries are the biggest so far.

President Trump has also stirred the pot with his Twitter feed.

"This morning's provocation from the North is just the latest reminder of the risks each one of you face every day in the defense of the freedom of the people of South Korea and the defense of America in this part of the world", he told members of the United States military in South Korea.

"North Korea is a problem", President Donald Trump told reporters Thursday.

Earlier this year, North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un, who presided over Saturday's parade, warned that the country was in the process of finalizing the development of an ICBM that would be capable of reaching U.S. territory.

South Korea's Foreign Ministry said Han's remarks on the North's readiness to conduct a nuclear test and even go to war reveal the "true colors of North Korea's government that is bellicose and a breaker of regulations".

The 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice rather than a peace treaty and Pyongyang says that it needs nuclear weapons to defend itself against a possible United States invasion.

Ostensibly Saturday's event was to mark the 105th anniversary of the North's founder Kim Il-Sung's birth.

Kim Jong-Un did not speak during the parade, the annual highlight of North Korea's most important holiday, which celebrates the 1912 birthday of his grandfather, Kim Il Sung, the country's founding ruler.

It was also a bold display for enemies such as the United States.

North Korea has attempted to launch a missile near Sinpo, on its east coast, but the missile blew up nearly immediately, a U.S. military spokesman says. One of the 60 missiles showcased is believed to be the new ICBM.

Kim Min-seok added that what appeared to be the first of the new ICBMs was "nearly similar" to the structure and launch tube of China's Dong Feng 31 (DF-31) ICBM. It is hard to say. The North also a year ago launched a long-range rocket that put a satellite into orbit, which Washington, Seoul and others saw as a banned test of missile technology.

North Korea has warned the USA not to take provocative action in the region, saying it is "ready to hit back with nuclear attacks".

Han and the military both warned that North Korea will respond to a USA strike.

Military conflict in the region would put at risk 20 million South Koreans living nearby in the capital of Seoul, along with almost 30,000 USA troops stationed in South Korea.
