North Korea test-fires missile into sea ahead of Trump-Xi summit

The KN-15 missile reportedly refers to what North Korea calls the solid-fuel "Pukguksong-2".

The European Union has increased its sanctions on North Korea because of its nuclear program and the threat it poses to the region with its recent ballistic missile testing.

During his testimony, Hyten pointed out that a similar missile North Korea tested in February utilized a new solid fuel and was sacked from a mobile launcher, and that this is concerning because solid fuel projectiles are more hard to track.

North Korea this week fired a projectile that flew about 37 miles into the East Sea, South Korea's military leadership said.

The missile in North Korea's latest launch didn't fly very far, but it may have been the second test of a technology that worries experts.

Pyongyang tested a new type of medium- to long-range ballistic missile in February, which it later said was an upgraded, extended-range version of its submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM).

Japan's Sawajiri destroyer will also join the drill and will be in charge of locating, detecting and following a fake North Korean submarine and exchanging relevant data during the drill.

North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes will be high on the agenda when Trump and Xi meet at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida later on Thursday, with anger in Beijing simmering over the deployment of an advanced USA anti-missile system in South Korea.

"This administration wants to see them act, and I think they're going to pressure them to do that", she said. "Until their nuclear and missile programs reach a point where they feel it could be used as a deterrent against the United States, the North probably won't show strong willingness for talks". Japan strongly protested the launch, which fell short of its exclusive economic zone, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said in Tokyo.

Analysts say North Korea might also time nuclear and long-range rocket tests to the April 15 birthday of North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, the late grandfather of current leader Kim Jong Un.

North Korea is pushing hard to upgrade its weapons systems to cope with what it calls U.S. hostility.

"Both sides agreed to pursue. plans in order to substantially strengthen the global community's sanctions and pressure on North Korea", South Korea's presidential Blue House said in a statement.

In August a year ago, North Korea made a major technological breakthrough by launching a ballistic missile from a submarine near Sinpo.

"It has invested heavily in the development of increasingly longer range ballistic missiles, and the miniaturization of its nascent nuclear weapons stockpile", according to a report by the non-partisan CSIS. The launch also came amid ongoing annual South Korea-U.S. military drills that North Korea usually responds to with its own military training and missile tests.

Mark Lippert, the former U.S, ambassador to South Korea, said nuclear deployment there is a concept that's been embraced by a growing number of Koreans. Earlier in March, it fired four missiles towards Japan, some of which came as close as 300 km (190 miles) to the Japanese coast.
