Pence In Asia, Trump Signs Executive Order: White House Schedule April 21

Mr Pence, the first senior United States administration official to visit Australia since the Republicans' shock election wins previous year, will meet Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in Sydney to discuss regional security and the North Korean nuclear threat, as part of efforts to reassure America's allies in Asia and smooth over relations with the federal government.

"So we don't know what the approach is there or if it has implications for us, so I'm sure they'll (Mr Turnbull and his senior ministers) will want insights from Mr Pence into Trump's thinking".

Widodo said at the joint news conference with Pence the two countries would "increase the strategic partnership. which will focus on cooperation and investments".

He also announced Trump's intentions to visit Southeast Asia in November for a yearly set of conferences. Robinson noted that it took Obama three years to visit Australia after he was elected, while former Vice President Joe Biden waited seven years before traveling Down Under. Under the deal, the United States agreed to resettle up to 1,250 asylum seekers held in offshore processing camps on South Pacific islands in Papua New Guinea and Nauru.

Though Turnbull may balk at publicly choosing between China and the U.S., Australia and China have been deepening their ties. He is also scheduled to meet with Governor-General Peter Cosgrove and local business leaders, before touring Sydney's iconic Opera House and visiting the city's seaside zoo.

But Pence foreshadowed some reworking of commercial and economic ties, saying that the USA seeks a free and fair relationship that helps job creation and economic growth for both sides. Beijing claims most of the South China Sea, but has overlapping claims with a number of Southeast Asian countries.

"We think there are opportunities to clear open the way for American companies to participate more greatly in Indonesia", Pence said, adding the agreements would "draw our nations closer together and benefit both our people".

Pence will then depart Jakarta for Sydney, Australia.
