Russia, Iran and Syria issue warning to US

Putin received Tillerson at the Kremlin along with Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov after the top diplomats held several hours of talks dominated by the fallout of an alleged chemical attack in Syria.

Putin, whom US intelligence agencies say tried to help Trump get elected, insisted that relations with the USA had only gone downhill since Trump took office in January.

He also backed United States calls to find a political solution and said the G7 leaders were ready to work with Russian Federation to end the violence in Syria.

He also rejected American claims of incontrovertible evidence that Assad ordered the chemical attack.

Russia's meddling in last year's U.S. presidential election has been "fairly well-established", Rex Tillerson has said, following talks with his counterpart in Moscow. Until the chemical attack, the Trump administration had sought to step back from the US position that Assad should leave power. The diplomats know each other well from Mr Tillerson's days as Exxon Mobil chief executive.

"It is clear to us the reign of the Assad family is coming to an end", he told reporters in Italy. I have absolutely no doubt we did the right thing, and it was very, very successfully done. "We're going to see how that works out".

Jens Stoltenberg, who heads up the 28-member North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance, said that "any use of chemical weapons is unacceptable. those accountable must be held responsible". In an interview yesterday, Putin said that if Donald Trump had meant to bring about a thaw in USA relations with Russian Federation, he has failed to see this intention through.

With regard to the recent USA strike on a Syrian air base, the statement said it was a "carefully calibrated, limited in scope response.to prevent and deter the proliferation of chemical weapons" in Syria.

Incorporated in the statement was recognition that stated, "We acknowledge that Russian Federation is an important worldwide player and that there are regional crises and global challenges that can not be solved without cooperation with Russian Federation". "I would like to say again that we never saw any facts; anything that would look even remotely like facts [to prove this]".

"We discussed our view that Russian Federation as their closest ally in the conflict perhaps has the best means of helping Assad recognise this reality", he said.

Mr Putin said he believed the United States would launch more missile strikes, and rebels were planning to stage chemical attacks to provoke more strikes.

Britain, the U.S. and France have circulated in the UN Security Council a revised version of their draft resolution on the investigation into the alleged chemical attack in Syria's Khan Sheikhoun on April 4. Any expectations of an easy rapport have crashed into reality amid the nasty back-and-forth over Syria and ongoing USA investigations into Russia's activity connected to the U.S. presidential election.
