Russian planes detected off Alaska 4 times this week

Russian aircraft on Friday reportedly flew near Alaska for fourth time in four days. Two U.S. Air Force F-22 fighter jets intercepted the bombers, a NORAD spokesman told Fox News without elaborating.

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., told CNN's Wolf Blitzer earlier this week that the Russians are "trying to show their teeth", by flying near the U.S.

It's unclear what the overall objective of the Russian passes are, but they're in keeping with tactics Russian pilots have employed in recent years in the Baltic and Black sea regions, where North Atlantic Treaty Organisation pilots regularly intercept aircraft sent by the Kremlin to skirt the airspace of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries. It was not immediately clear how close they came to mainland Alaska.

American officials had reported that the US military tracked two (Tu-95) Russian bombers that were about 36 miles away from the Alaskan coast.

Similar flights in past days have been intercepted by US jets and escorted out of the ADIZ.

Two F-22 Raptor stealth jets and an E-3 Sentry early warning plane were dispatched in global airspace on Monday night. The Russians don't always include flights down the West coast as part of the exercise, but this time they did.

Pentagon officials said they believed the Russians were testing the U.S. Air Force's response to their bomber flights.

"This was a show of force by the Russians to show us that they are still here", he added, calling it "an attempt to come up as close as they could to our global borders to see what our reaction would be".
