Sanchez and Ozil end Arsenal's 3-month wait for EPL away win

Sanchez and Ozil end Arsenal's 3-month wait for EPL away win

Wenger warned his players they can afford no further slip-ups if they are to secure yet another top-four Premier League finish.

However, goals from Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil wrapped up the three points for Arsene Wenger's men and handed them a much-needed boost ahead of their FA Cup semi-final clash against Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.

Arsene Wenger praised the "mentality" of his players after Arsenal battled to a 2-1 victory at struggling Middlesbrough on Monday night but the Gunners boss again refused to clarify his own future at the club.

On his decision to play three at the back for the first time in his 20 years: "Yes, it is the first time in 20 years".

"I felt that when we scored we had Arsenal on the back foot and at that point we just needed the ball to fall to us. We were riding our luck a little bit in one or two occasions on crosses, but overall we were a bit more solid defensively today", a visibly revealed Wenger said.

He said: "If you asked the other teams 'Are Middlesbrough one of the three worst teams in the league?', I don't suppose many would say we are. You could see we did not play with full confidence, but overall we really wanted to win", the Arsenal manager told Sky Sports. Even then, Manchester City could afford to drop four points from its final six games, with a goal difference now superior to Arsenal's. "We knew we would face a direct game and recently we have been punished on that".

"Middlesbrough gave everything. It's among their last opportunities to keep in the league. I thought we did well tonight".

Sanchez curled in a free kick right before halftime that was canceled out at the start of the second half by Alvaro Negredo.

The first-half was a boring affair with the visitors, not surprisingly, having the lion's share of position but all too often lethargic with their passing. "Of course, the opponents had a bit more of the ball than we're used to".

Agnew said: "I think that was the moment".

As for Boro, time is running out to save themselves from relegation and they were once more made to pay for their wastefulness in front of goal, defeat keeping them six points from safety.

'I've played once before in a back three and it was actually here on my Championship debut with Bolton, ' Holding added.

"The players were incredible, I couldn't ask any more of them", he said.
