Steve Fisher retiring from San Diego State

Basketball Coach Steve Fisher retired this week after 18 seasons at San Diego State University, having sustained something more impressive, more unlikely than the six-game run the Michigan Wolverines took to the national title with Fisher as interim head coach in 1989 before he assembled its Fab Five. But after 495 career victories, Fisher has chose to hang it up.

On Tuesday at a press conference Steve Fisher formally announced he is retiring from coaching.

"I've enjoyed the journey with coach Fisher and have learned so much over the years", Dutcher said. I also want to say thank you to Coach Miles and his staff, my teammates and the Athletics Department. "He's a great man".

Fisher also collected several accolades as head coach of the Aztecs, including four Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year awards, Naismith College Coach of the Year in 2011 and NABC Coach of the Year in 2011.

Fisher, who has led the team for 18 years, and athletic director John David Wicker said Fisher will remain at SDSU in an unspecified capacity.

Fisher, 72, said it was simply time to step away and hand over the program to his long-time assistant, Brian Dutcher. Since then, Fisher and his wife, Angie, have talked after every season about his future.

Fisher's overall record, when you factor in the MI wins that are no longer officially counted (but still happened, there are YouTube videos and everything) will be 571-290.

Fisher inherited a team that won four games the season before.

Fisher's career record at MI from 1989-97 was 185-81 with six NCAA tournament appearances and an NIT championship.

Fishers work at SDSU was nothing short of remarkable, and he became one of the most-beloved figures in San Diego sports history.

Dutcher, who joined Fisher at MI in 1989, was central to recruiting the Fab Five, Fisher said. The Fab Five would follow, as would two more appearances in the title game and then Fisher's firing in October 1997 because of the program's involvement with booster Ed Martin.

The Aztecs hired Fisher in March 1999.

This past season, SDSU posted the team's worst record since 2005-2006.

Until Fisher came along, the Aztecs barely had a hoops legacy.

This decision comes on the heels of a disappointing 19-14 season, which snapped an 11-year postseason tournament streak.
