April 7 marks the anniversary of the WHO's initiation, which was founded in 1948.

Subramaniam said the theme Depression - Let's Talk is aimed at raising awareness on depression in our society, its causes, and factors that lead to suicide.

WHO felt that the stigma surrounding mental illness, including depression, remained a barrier to people seeking help throughout the world.

Depression affects people of all ages, from all walks of life, in all countries.

World Health Day celebrations at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) got a fillip from Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone on Saturday as she spoke about depression cutting across class, urban and rural barriers.

But cases of depression continue to get worse. There has been over 18 percent rise in the number of people suffering from depression in 2015 compared to 2005.

In a press release from the WHO, Dr. Margaret Chan, the director-general said that the numbers were a "wake-up call" for every country about their mental health policies and to treat depression as it deserves, with urgency. Many Belizeans of all ethnic groups are affected by depression.

The event witnessed launch of launch of eCAP & SOL's - two telepsychiatry applications for the rural and urban population in need of mental health consultation.

World Health Day has been celebrated globally since 1950.

Failure to act is costly. The losses are incurred by households, employers and governments: for households, with absence from work affecting household income; for employers, with lower productivity of employees when at work and absence from work; and for governments, with higher health and welfare expenditures. According to World Health Organization figures, the total cases of depressive disorders in 2015 in India were 5,66,75,969 which was 4.5 per cent of population in 2015 while total cases of anxiety disorders were 3,84,250,93 which was 3 per cent of the population in the same year period.

Dr Noor Hisham said the public should be more open-minded to understand and to give support to individuals suffering from depression, but those who were living in depression should also be more open-minded, not only to seek help and treatment, but also to talk to someone about it.

Although there are several different types of depression, there are a number of common symptoms.

In addition, people with depression normally have several of the following: a loss of energy; a change in appetite; sleeping more or less; anxiety; reduced concentration; indecisiveness; restlessness; feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness; and thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

Udoh said that appropriate mental and physical health care, along with regular monitoring and psychological and social support can make a big difference.
