Tesla will double the amount of Superchargers globally, this year!

Tesla will almost double its Supercharger electric auto charging network this year, the company said Monday.

It is extremely important to us and our mission that charging is convenient, abundant, and reliable for all owners, current and future. Superchargers will increase by 150 percent in North America, and 1,000 additional Superchargers will be built in California alone.

Destination charging connectors are commercial equivalents of home chargers EV holders that mostly installed in garage will be increasing from over 9,000 to 15,000 installations by the end of 2017.

The company says it's now working on site selection, with construction starting ahead of the summer travel season.

The timing of this announcement comes right as Tesla ownership is expected to dramatically increase with the shipping of the "affordable" Tesla Model 3 (it starts around $35,000).

Tesla has updated its plans to expand its Supercharger and related public charging infrastructure in anticipation of its Model 3. The company says it will add charging locations within city centers as well as highway sites this year.

It's a Tesla Supercharger station, part of the electric automaker's plan to double the number of charging stations worldwide.

Tesla wants to make "charging [their] priority". Tesla, which had previously announced in its annual shareholder letter plans to double the network in North America, did not disclose the cost of such an ambitious expansion. But any company that can build and install a 396 Powerpack system for Southern California Edison in 3 months time is more than up to the challenge of expanding its charging network rapidly. But as Tesla cars have become more numerous, some drivers have complained of lines and long waits at busy Supercharger stations.

"As Tesla prepares for our first mass-market vehicle and continues to increase our Model S and Model X fleet, we're making charging an even greater priority", Tesla said on Monday. The company's aggressive expansion has essentially enabled long-distance travel anywhere in the United States and has facilitated convenient travel in other overseas markets like Western Europe and China.

It takes about 30 minutes to charge a Tesla battery to 80 percent of its capacity, depending on the battery size, which gives around 170 miles of driving.
