Trump administration says Iran complying with nuclear deal

In a letter to U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, the top Republican in Congress, on Tuesday U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Iran remained compliant with the 2015 deal, but said there were concerns about its role as a state sponsor of terrorism.

"I'm glad this deal has held up to this point, and I hope it continues to hold up", said Wendy Sherman, a former undersecretary of state who was deeply involved in negotiating terms of the deal during the Obama administration.

Sajjadpour also noted that Iran was fulfilling its obligations under the deal.

The agreement exchanged limits on Iran's nuclear program to thwart its ability to create a nuclear weapon with the lifting of crippling worldwide economic and oil sanctions.

He faulted the agreement for "buying off" a foreign power with nuclear ambitions, saying: "We just don't see that that's a prudent way to be dealing with Iran".

"The deal was limited by design", said John Kirby, an Obama State Department spokesman and CNN military and diplomatic analyst. Like with the North, Tillerson said, the Trump administration was unwilling to be patient with Iran, ticking through a list of countries where he said Iran was supporting terrorism and violence.

His statement was the latest in a drumbeat of warnings from the Trump administration that it is set to crack down on Iran and might reconsider the nuclear deal reached between the US, EU partners, Russian Federation and China.

Former US President Barack Obama had said the deal would make the world safer and more secure.

The official concluded, "I'm not sure that's a compelling case to stay in the JCPOA and continue to provide the sanctions relief that is fueling Iran's belligerent and unsafe behavior".

Iran has continued to test ballistic missiles - which was not part of the nuclear agreement - and Iran has kept up its staunch support of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

And even if the United States does not reimpose the nuclear sanctions that it dropped under the deal, it could impose penalties on Iran for its alleged sponsorship of armed "terrorist" movements in other countries.

But Majidyar argued that scrapping the deal wouldn't help Washington.

The Trump administration has given itself 90 days to complete its review, but will need to make a series of decisions in coming weeks about whether to continue its support of the deal, which was also brokered with Britain, China, France, Germany and Russian Federation. "What I see is a more strict (US) interpretation of the deal and that interpretation will be different than Iran's interpretation".

White House press secretary Sean Spicer talks to the media during the daily press briefing at the White House in Washington, Monday, April 10, 2017. "If he didn't, if he thought everything was fine he would've allowed this to move forward".

"Everywhere you look if there is trouble in the region, you find Iran", Mattis told reporters in Riyadh, after meeting senior Saudi officials. "So right now what we're seeing is the nations in the region.trying to checkmate Iran and the amount of disruption and instability they can cause".
