Trump hails Italy for role in Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan

At a White House press conference with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni yesterday, Trump said the U.S. will play no part in helping stabilise the war-ravaged nation.

Trump further praised Italy as a "key partner" in the fight against Islamic State (IS) terrorism, but made it clear that the U.S. would not send ground troops to stabilize conflict-ridden Libya, though Gentiloni pointed out that the chaos there had aided the spread of IS influence in the region.

"I think we'll get both", he said. "We have a role everywhere", Trump said.

"We don't know whether or not they're able to do that, but I have absolute confidence that he will be trying very, very hard", Trump said. A divided country and in conflict would make stability worse.

He also plans to attend the Group of Seven annual gathering of leaders of major industrialized democracies in Italy next month.

Gentiloni said they had discussed the importance of fighting the division in Libya that has led to the emergence of Islamic State in the country, sparked violence and added to the flight of refugees across the Mediterranean.

He also spoke of the trade deficit between the USA and Italy, with Rome lagging behind some 28 billion dollars in terms of mutual investment. Much is uncertain in Europe, with Britain's decision to leave the European Union and the upcoming French presidential election — the first round of voting is Sunday.

"A strong Europe is very, very important to me as president of the United States. The Italy-US partnership is not only an opportunity but a duty", he said.

Gentiloni noted Italy and America's "common commitment against terrorism".

Trump plans to attend a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting May 25 in Brussels before traveling to the G-7 gathering of representatives from the U.S., Germany, France, Britain, Canada, Japan and Italy.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Wednesday that the White House would be reaching out to the Vatican to "see if a meeting, an audience with the Pope can be accommodated".

"On a broad range of things, we find ourselves tremendously aligned", Trudeau said, who visited Europe last winter to praise free trade agreements, including the Canada-EU pact.

"We are used to respecting our commitments", Gentiloni said. Italy has suffered sluggish economic growth and was a staunch backer of a proposed U.S.

Paris police say a gunman has killed a police officer and wounded another before being killed himself in an attack on the Champs-Elysees shopping district. "And we have to be strong and we have to be vigilant, and I've been saying it for a long time".
