U.S. officials say Russian inaction enabled Syria chemical attack

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani called Assad to reaffirm his support for the Syrian leader in the wake of the U.S. strike, Rouhani's office said on Sunday.

Sir Michael also reiterated his support of Mr Trump's cruise missile strike in the early hours of Friday.

The Syrian government has been accused of carrying out multiple chlorine gas attacks.

And other members are keen to establish clarity over the U.S.'s position on Assad's regime, ahead of a visit to Russian Federation by U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Tuesday.

But his call was wrapped in kind words about the Syrian president and condemnation of the US strikes carried out on a Syrian airbase on Friday, in retaliation for a chemical attack on civilians in a rebel-held area of Syria.

"If you look at his actions, if you look at the situation, it's going to be hard to see a government that's peaceful and stable with Assad", said Haley. Russian Federation should ask themselves. why are we supporting this murderous regime that is committing mass murder of its own population and using the most heinous weapons available.

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., on Sunday praised President Donald Trump's actions in Syria but reiterated his stance that troops on the ground will be needed to stop Bashar al-Assad and the Islamic State.

"It's important that we keep our priorities straight. I think the president has been quite clear", Tillerson told CBS' "Face the Nation." They said the U.S. actions against a sovereign state violatied worldwide law and called for an objective, unbiased investigation of all the circumstances of the chemical weapons incident, the statement said.

At least 70 people died in what the United States says was a chemical weapons attack in rebel-held Syria. They're saying by covering for Assad that they knew that it was there, or they were incompetent by having chemical weapons there in the first place.

The UK deplored "Russia's continued defence of the Assad regime even after the chemical weapons attack on innocent civilians", he added.

Tillerson insisted he had no concerns about possible Russian retaliation after the U.S. attack on the airbase.

"Evident is the fundamental misunderstanding or lack of knowledge of the events in Syria, Russia's efforts to settle that crisis, and the general objectives of diplomacy", the Russian ministry said in a statement.

"It was a very deliberate, very proportional, and very targeted strike undertaken in response to the chemical weapons attack. And Russia was never part of the targeting".

The defence secretary's newspaper article saw him add his support for a long-term solution to the civil war in which Assad must no longer be president.

But he said the United States expected Russian Federation to take a tougher stance by rethinking its alliance with Assad because "every time one of these horrific attacks occurs, it draws Russian Federation closer into some level of responsibility".

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said he had canceled a scheduled April 10 visit to Moscow as developments in Syria "have changed the situation fundamentally". Meanwhile, Tillerson suggested that the airstrikes hadn't really changed priorities toward ousting Assad.
