Umpire Dale Scott leaves game after being struck in mask

Home plate umpire and crew chief Dale Scott was released from a Toronto hospital this morning after being carted off the field in the top of the eighth inning Friday night.

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson was put on the 10-day disabled list before Friday's game against the Baltimore Orioles.

Scott recoiled after the ball struck the bottom of his mask and knocked it off, staggering backward before going down on one knee. He was tended to by trainers from both teams, paramedics and a Blue Jays team doctor.

Early Saturday, Scott told The Associated Press by text that he was out of the hospital, feeling OK and that the results of a CT scan were normal. The 57-year-old was reported to have suffered a concussion after getting hit in the face mask by a foul tip in the eighth inning.

St. Petersburg, FL, USA; Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons (5) looks on from the dugout against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. "That one was not good". "He works hard. Umpires are vulnerable too out there, just like a catcher". The blast made a victor of closer Roberto Osuna (1-0), who gave up the tying run in the top half of the frame. Toronto, off to the poorest start in franchise history, is just 2-9 this season and has scored three runs or fewer eight times. "There just weren't enough there at the end".

Zach Britton pitched the bottom of the ninth to earn his fourth save.

Liriano was replaced by Joe Biagini with two outs and a runner at first base in the seventh inning. Martinez, making his first career appearance on the mound, allowed a hit in a scoreless ninth.

"We know what (Miley) is capable of", Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. Hyun Soo Kim then doubled and Hardy belted his first homer of the season to give Baltimore a 4-3 lead.

"That's what Baltimore does as well as anybody in baseball", Gibbons said.

Blue Jays ace Aaron Sanchez (0-1) allowed five runs and seven hits, including three homers, in 5 1/3 innings.

Justin Smoak crushed his first home run of the year in Friday's loss to the Orioles.

"I felt like I was throwing the ball well early on", Sanchez said.

Davis tacked on a run in the sixth inning with a solo shot to deep centre field.

Kendrys Morales singled and went to third on a double by Troy Tulowitzki. A potentially risky collision was avoided when the bat hit the final panel of safety screen in front of the on-field seats behind home plate. The Orioles obtained LHP Paul Fry from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for an global bonus slot. The Orioles will counter with fellow right-hander Alec Asher (season debut). Chris Coghlan will come up from Triple-A Buffalo to take Donaldson's place on the roster. Regardless, Darwin Barney fought off a changeup and dumped a soft liner to CF, scoring Bautista on a close play at the plate to give the Jays the lead.

The Blue Jays have started off their season with an abysmal 1-8 record and they already sit 5.5 games back of the division leader, the Baltimore Orioles.
