United chief met Chinese officials over dragged passenger

United said this week its chief executive met with the Chinese consulate in Chicago over the possible impact to bookings from a customer being dragged off a plane but it was too early to tell if business in China had been hit by the event.

For those unfamiliar with the situation, here's a quick recap of the story so far: On April 9, United asked for volunteers to be bumped off a flight from Chicago to Louisville so that airline crew members could catch the flight. Three officers have been placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.

"We are and will make the necessary policy changes to ensure this never happens again", Munoz said.

The damaging passenger dragging incident, caught on video, was down to a 'system failure'.

The CEO took personal responsibility for the incident, which drew widespread condemnation, and said no employees would be fired as a result of it. Munoz confirmed that he would remain in his position amid public calls for his resignation.

Like the United Airlines CEO, Metrorail would have a ready string of excuses, cable theft being one of them.

Limited competition at many major airports could blunt any nascent boycott of United. Then he noted that the board of United Continental Holdings Inc. has supported him.

According to Munoz, there was "never consideration" of firing any employees over the incident, which sparked outrage around the world after video footage of Dao's treatment went viral online.

The airline already offered refunds to passengers on the flight and said police will no longer be called to remove paid, seated passengers from flights, unless for safety or security issues, Munoz said.

Dao, a Vietnamese-American, was bloodied and suffered a concussion and two broken teeth in the confrontation, which created an uproar on Chinese social media.

United President Scott Kirby said, "We feel like we've managed that pretty well and our corporate accounts are largely supportive".

"I want to know why this happened, how it was allowed to occur and what protocols are in place to handle overbooked flights", said Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Ill.

United beat analysts' forecasts of $0.38 per share and $8.38 billion in operating revenue by posting adjusted earnings of $0.41 per share and $8.41 billion in revenue.
