US VP Pence assures Japan America is with ally '100 percent'

With a U.S. aircraft carrier group steaming to the area in a show of force, fears of a confrontation have been rising.

Pence also reassured Japan of American commitment to reining in North Korea's nuclear and missile ambitions on Tuesday, after warning that United States strikes in Syria and Afghanistan showed the strength of its resolve.

Terry said she sees the Trump administration's approach as "an intensification of Obama's sanctions approach", adding it is yet unclear what is replacing strategic patience.

Pence, on a 10-day Asia trip that will also take him to Indonesia and Australia, said Trump hopes China will use its leverage to get its longtime ally North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons program.

"The United States of America will always seek peace but under President Trump, the shield stands guard and the sword stands ready", Pence told 2,500 sailors dressed in blue fatigues and Naval baseball caps on a sunny, windy morning aboard the carrier at the U.S. Yokosuka naval base in Tokyo Bay.

Wang's comments came amid a mounting war of words between Washington and Pyongyang.

North Korea showed off an array of weapons including missiles in a military parade Saturday before an unsuccessful ballistic missile test the following day.

The vice president earlier visited a military installation near the DMZ, Camp Bonifas, for a briefing with military leaders. He also met with American troops stationed at the joint US-South Korean military camp.

As North Korean officials continue to conduct missile tests, U.S. Senator Mike Rounds says they continue to be a problem that has plagued us for many years. But he stressed: "Dialogue for dialogue's sake is meaningless".

Urging China and Russian Federation to play more constructive roles, he added: "We need to apply pressure on North Korea so they seriously respond to a dialogue [with the global community]". While the North did not conduct a nuclear test, the spectre of a potential test and an escalated USA response has trailed Pence as he undertakes his Asian tour.

While Japan's trade surplus with the United States is much smaller than China's, Trump has decried the imbalance, especially in auto exports.

The Abe administration has maintained it is pursuing a combination of "dialogue and pressure" in dealing with North Korea.

He said that an "all-out war" would result if the U.S. took military action. "They've all been outplayed by this gentleman and we'll see what happens".

The economic dialogue seemed to have started smoothly, but Japanese government officials are cautious that the USA would likely press hard for Tokyo to remove trade barriers.

A day after North Korea launched its latest test missile, an experiment that ultimately fizzled out, Mr Pence said the United States was hopeful China would use its "extraordinary levers" to persuade the North to give up its nuclear arms.

But officials at Pentagon are believed to be unsure how North Korea would respond if United States the shoots down a test missile.

China has reiterated its call for North Korea to stop all tests, and has also called for a peaceful solution.

Vice-president Mike Pence, meanwhile, said the "era of strategic patience is over" during a visit to Seoul and he told South Korea the USA is with the nation 100pc.

US Vice President Mike Pence: "It is our belief by bringing together the family of nations with diplomatic and economic pressure we have a chance of achieving a freeze on the Korean Peninsula". After U.S. withdrew from the Trans-Pacific trade pact, the U.S. has been keen to establish bilateral deals with Japan.
