USS Carl Vinson carrier group expected off Korea at end of April

Such a defiant move was likely to draw even more pressure from the United States which ordered its nuclear-powered USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier strike group to the region, Lu told the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post.

"The statement that was put out was that the Carl Vinson group was headed towards the Korean Peninsula".

Abe has indicated he will discuss North Korea with Russian President Vladimir Putin during their meeting later this month.

"US Pacific Command ordered the Carl Vinson Strike Group north as a prudent measure to maintain readiness and presence in the Western Pacific", said Commander Dave Benham, spokesman at US Pacific Command.

The deployment has angered North Korea, which has called the move an effort to increase tensions in the region. In fairness, neither Trump nor the Navy said when the Carl Vinson was going to head north, so technically no one lied here.

Pentagon chief Jim Mattis said the Vinson was "on her way up" to the region.

More than a week after reports first emerged that the aircraft carrier and its accompanying ships were headed toward the peninsula amid fears North Korea may conduct another nuclear test, Navy photos from Saturday show Vinson operating almost 3,500 miles away, off Indonesia.

But on Tuesday, Defense News reported that a publicly released photo showed the Vinson off the coast of Indonesia, about 3,500 miles away from the Korean Peninsula, and heading south, not north to its stated destination.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer had also confirmed the Vinson's redeployment. The Vinson, as I said on the record, was operating up and down the Western Pacific and we were doing exactly what we said.

Pence said during a Monday visit to South Korea that the North needs to abandon its weapons program and stop testing ballistic missiles. "And that could be a logical conclusion from what's just happened", said North Korea expert Joel Wit at the 38 North monitoring group, run by Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies.

China, meanwhile, is feeling anything but reassured, warning recently that "a storm is about to break" over the divided Korean Peninsula.

"They are not going to support some military adventurism to take a gamble with the execution of some preventive military operation against North Korea".

Vice President Mike Pence, who called the latest missile test a "provocation", is now in South Korea to meet with USA and South Korean military.

"The point the President was making is that we're ready".

The Vinson group includes the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and its embarked air wing, the destroyers USS Wayne E. Meyer and USS Michael Murphy, and the cruiser USS Lake Champlain.
