Watch The April's 'Pink Moon' That Will Gleam Gracefully This Week

High clouds combined with the sunrise this morning to actually give the moon a pinkish hue, but that's not the reason it's called the "pink" moon.

Rather, the name of the celestial event that takes place every spring pays homage to the pink wildflowers or "moss pink" flowers that appear every April. This full moon of April is called the Pink Moon because it is named after pink flowers called wild ground phlox which boom in early spring.

The Pink Moon could be seen any night between now and April 12.

The practice of naming moons is well established and it's why we have the Blue Moon and the Green Moon.

Why is the Pink Moon special?

The fish nickname was reportedly coined by coastal American Indian tribes that noticed shad would swim upstream to spawn around the time of the April full moon. "Full moons have been considered a time of celebration", explains Arvind Paranjpye, director of Worli's Nehru Planetarium. Time and Date Moonrise Calculator is a handy resource to figure out when exactly the Moon will be visible at your location. A full moon just above Lake Ontario or the Rockies is a sight to behold.

The appearance of the pink moon marks the beginnings of festivals and celebrations in many cultures around the world. For the skywatchers on West Coast, the moon will be at its peak at 11:08 on Monday (April 10). The Jewish Passover will also be observed during the visibility of the April full moon.
