Australian Government "looking very closely" at laptop ban on worldwide flights

Australian Government

Turnbull has not indicated if the ban is being actively considered or any timeframe for a decision.

In March, the U.S. banned laptops and other electronics being used on inbound worldwide flights from 10 airports in Muslim-majority countries in the Middle East and Africa.

When questioned on the matter after the United States and United Kingdom announced the bans, the Australian government had said there no plans to enact such a ban locally at that time.

Australia is one of the largest contributors to the US-led mission against IS in the Middle East and shares highly classified intelligence material with the country as part of the Five Eyes agreement.

"We are taking into account all of the information and advice we're receiving internationally and we're working very closely with our partners", Turnbull said (via the ABC).

Aviation safety consultant Geoffrey Askew - a former Qantas executive responsible for security and safety - said such a ban would have a huge impact on passengers and airlines, particularly when first put in place and especially if applied to flights from Australia to the US.

John Kelly, the U.S. homeland security secretary, has hinted that Washington may extend the ban to cover flights destined for the United States from a number of European countries, including Britain.

Australia is considering banning laptops in the cabins of inbound commercial passenger flights, amid global concerns about a new terrorist threat.

The affected airports include Cairo; Istanbul; Kuwait City; Doha, Qatar; Casablanca, Morocco; Amman, Jordan; Riyadh and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; and Dubai and Abu Dhabi in United Arab Emirates.
