Bill Cosby: Racism 'could' have played a role in sexual-assault accusations

Michael Smerconish: "Are you telling me that they're all lying?"

"Meaning, you can't answer that question, or you won't answer that question?" "I want people to understand my work as an artist, a performer", he said.

Cosby will go on trial next month on charges that he drugged and assaulted Andrea Constand, a former Temple University staff member, in his house north of Philadelphia in 2004. He has pleaded not guilty and remains free on million-dollar bail.

A good portion of the interview was spent discussing matters not directly related to the criminal case, such as the issue of whether Cosby intends to perform again some day. Still, he said he wanted to speak out for his remaining fans.

"I think that the numbers came because the number prior to the numbers didn't work", he said. In them, Cosby reminisced in measured tones about his upbringing in Philadelphia and time playing sports in Fairmount Park as a youth with a makeshift football, made up of crumpled newspapers and rubber bands, time playing football with his friends in Fairmount Park.

Bill Cosby says that "could be".

"Boy, the education I'm getting is absolutely fantastic", he said.

Asked by Smerconish whether he agrees with that assessment, Cosby said: "Could be, could be". "He has a strong mind, and he's capable". But he said he has "never, never" lost the support of his wife of over 50 years, Camille. He settled Constand's civil suit in 2006 for an undisclosed sum after giving deposition testimony that became public in 2015.

Comedian Bill Cosby leaves the Montgomery County Courthouse with his criminal defense lawyer Brian McMonagle (L) after a pretrial conference related to aggravated indecent assault charges on September 6, 2016, in Norristown, Pennsylvania.

At the end of the interview, Cosby thanked the host, before adding: "I just hope I'm not in trouble now, man".

"Do you expect to testify on your own behalf at that trial", asked Smerconish.

"I knew that there would be limitations on that which he would be able and willing to say pertaining to the upcoming trial", he said after being approached by a Cosby rep with statements from the family and asking for an interview with the actor directly.

Later in the interview, Cosby also lamented the sheer number of women who have come forward to level accusations against him.

Cosby's trial is scheduled to begin in suburban Pittsburgh next month. In his first interview since 2014, the 79-year-old has said something so dumb that he might want to plan another three year hiatus from talking to the media.

The assertion comes as a response to comments made by Cosby's daughter.

Bill Cosby agreed with his daughter Ensa Cosby's recent assertion that racism played a major role in the sexual assault case filed against him.

"Could be. Could be", Cosby replied. 'I can't say anything, but there are certain things that I look at, and I apply to the situation, and there are so many tentacles.

At one point, Smerconish asked Cosby if he believes racism is a factor, and the comedian responded: "Could be".
