CBI arrests MD of Essar Group, I-T Commissioner in graft case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested the Commissioner of Income Tax department and five other senior officers in an alleged bribery case.

The income tax commissioner (appeals), BB Rajendra Prasad, had allegedly accepted the amount to pass a favourable order on an appeal filed by a trust under the Essar group.

Sources suggest the Commissioner has been charged for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 19 lakh to favour a major corporate group.

Prasad was caught red handed while receiving Rs 19.34 lakh from a real estate agent, Suresh Kumar Jain, in Visakhapatnam.

According to Prasad's instructions, the money was to be delivered in Mumbai to Manish Jain (suspected to be the hawala operator), who would then transfer it to his relative Suresh Kumar Jain in Visakhapatnam. It said on Monday Prasad contacted Jain and asked him to hand over part of the amount he had received on his behalf.

While Prasad and Suresh Jain were arrested from Visakhapatnam, the rest four, including Mittal, were arrested from Mumbai. A source told CBI that the amount was likely to be delivered to Prasad on Tuesday at his Visakhapatnam residence.

During the raid and arrest conducted based on a tip-off, the CBI has seized almost Rs 1.5 crore in cash. "We will be seeking their transit remand and will produce them before a court in Vishakhapatnam", a CBI official was quoted by report as saying.

The CBI sleuths conducted raids in Mumbai and Visakhapatnam at the offices and residences of all the accused leading to recovery of several property investment documents, details of bank accounts, three bank lockers and other incriminating papers.

The trust said its executives are cooperating with the investigation and would continue to do so. "Our executives are innocent and the company stands by them", the spokesperson said.
