Cyber attack is biggest of its kind ever launched, say security chiefs

"Our immediate priority as a government is to disrupt the attack, restore affected services as soon as possible, and establish who was behind it".

"You never want to pay a criminal as there is no honour amongst thieves but ultimately its going to be a business decision if they think they can not operate without these files", he said.

"The governments of the world should treat this attack as a wake up call".

The global cyber attack has affected the IT systems at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The attack therefore spread faster than previous, smaller-scale ransomware attacks.

Bloomberg Businessweek wrote in 2015 about a spate of malware infections at hospitals where radiological machines, blood-gas analysers and other devices were compromised and used to siphon off the personal data of patients.

They proposed a plan to improve security that included a replacement of outdated systems "as a matter of urgency", calling the continued use "one of the most pressing issues facing IT infrastructure" in the NHS.

"Particularly careful clicking on links or opening attachments like a photo or a file".

"Police Scotland has been working closely with the National Crime Agency who are leading the UK-wide law enforcement investigative response, and this will continue". In an article published in the BMJ, Dr Krishna Chinthapalli, a neurology registrar at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London, warned of such attacks by ransomware this year.

Meanwhile East Lancashire Hosptials NHS Trust confirmed yesterday (Sunday 14th) that elective procedures and day surgery at Burnley General and Royal Blackburn hospital would go ahead today as planned.

Ryan Kalember, senior vice president at Proofpoint Inc., which helped stop its spread, said the version without a kill switch was able to spread but was benign because it contained a flaw that wouldn't allow it to take over a computer and demand ransom to unlock files.

This particular attack used malicious emails to encrypt a computer's data and demand payment of hundreds of dollars to decode the data.

Europol, which the United Kingdom helped set up but will have to leave in the case of a hard Brexit, had previously issued warnings about the possible cyber-attack.

"I think $20,000 to $30,000 worth", said Rob Wainwright, the director of Europol.

"The difficulty is, of course, there are literally hundreds of instances of ransomware in Australia each week, so we're now seeking to confirm whether these are examples of the particular ransomware that has caused so much havoc for example in the United Kingdom", she told reporters in Cairns.

The company's top lawyer said the government should report weaknesses it discovers to software companies rather than seek to exploit them.

Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard of the Royal College of General Practitioners said many Global Positioning System went into their practices on Sunday to reboot their computers and install updates.

Fallon told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show: "I can assure you that the nuclear deterrent is fully protected".
