ESPN ending 'Mike & Mike' radio show after 17 years

ESPN ending 'Mike & Mike' radio show after 17 years

The Mikes briefly spoke about the split during this morning's show, and the large Mike didn't seem too thrilled about how things have gone down, even though he will be doing a new radio show with Trey Wingo and his son, Mike Jr.

Look at it another way: Apart from "SportsCenter:AM", ESPN2 will have little in the way of original programming when the new lineup goes into effect.

- Noon-1: A new live show featuring Bomani Jones and Pablo Torre.

The "Mike & Mike" split has been speculated about since January, when SI's Richard Deitsch first reported that ESPN planned to give Greenberg his own show.

According to ESPN, the new show will have "several full-time co-hosts and a rotation of various guests and expert contributors". Additional details about the show, including the name, will be announced at a later date. The program will also be streamed live on the ESPN app and WatchESPN across all devices and platforms. Jones is now a co-host for "Highly Questionable" which is expected to announce a new co-host. "Let me be up front at this upfront; ESPN is responding to change, and we are making changes from the most dramatic position of strength", he told buyers gathered at the Minskoff Theatre in Times Square. "We have a chance to make something new, fresh and entertaining, and I can't wait to take on that challenge".

Following that will be the show hosted by Jones and Torre.

The network also says Golic and Wingo have multiyear extensions to stay with ESPN.

Maria Taylor, Laura Rutledge to host "College GameDay", "SEC Nation": With Samantha Ponder of "College GameDay" succeeding Chris Berman as host of "Sunday NFL Countdown", ESPN said Taylor will join "College GameDay" and ABC's "Saturday Night Football". These will be shown "multiple times per hour" and will be brief "up-to-the-minute" news updates, similar to the "SportsCenter" updates already heard on ESPN Radio. He will remain as co-host of Highly Questionable until late June 2017. Like "Mike & Mike", the program will be simulcast on ESPN2 at first, before moving to its permanent home on ESPNU. It makes sense that the pair would be the flawless bridge from the high volume of First Take to the in-depth reporting of Outside the Lines. That time slot opened up when ESPN promoted "His & Hers" co-hosts Michael Smith and Jemele Hill left to lead the 6 p.m. ET "SportsCenter". There arguably aren't two better choices than Jones and Torre who offer a great mix of insightful commentary, relevancy, and humor.

"Fans understand the distinction between just getting the score, just getting a highlight, and getting it on ESPN with personality and authority", he said.
