Eurovision winner arrives home to Portugal

"I want to congratulate Salvador Sobral, the victor of Eurovision 2017, not only because he gave Portugal the victory for this first time, but also because he was an Erasmus student", the spokesperson for the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas said on Monday.

Italy and Portugal had been the bookmakers' favorites going into the 62nd edition of the Eurovision contest, which was hosted in the Ukrainian capital Kiev.

Salvador managed to score a whopping 758 points for his country on the night, beating second place Bulgaria by over 100 as they racked up a total of 613.

Third was Moldova's SunStroke Project with a raucous song called "Hey, Mamma" featuring a saxophonist in sunglasses and dancers in wedding dresses and veils.

This year there were no nil pointers but Portugal's neighbor Spain was the unlucky last place finisher with 5 points.

"The Eurovision is the most famous song contest in the world".

Kiev barred Russia's singer Yuliya Samoilova because she had illegally entered Crimea to perform there after Moscow's disputed annexation of the peninsula from Ukraine.

In response, Russia's state-owned Channel 1 television refused to broadcast the contest, replacing Saturday's final with a screening of the film "Alien".

In the Grand Final, juries and viewers from all 42 participating countries can voted after the 26 finalists performed. Samoylova has already been announced as Russia's Eurovision candidate for 2018.

In 2009, the EBU nixed the Georgian entry "We Don't Wanna Put In", a dig at Russian President Vladimir Putin.

This dwarfed Jamala's win past year for Ukraine with 534 points.

From its launch with seven countries, Eurovision has grown to include more than 40, including non-European nations such as Israel and, somewhat controversially, far-off Australia, where the event has a huge fan following.
