Israeli Patriot missiles down target over Golan Heights: army

A Lebanese television station affiliated with Hezbollah said early indications were that the strikes hit warehouses and fuel tanks and had caused only material damage with no human casualties.

The Syrian military said the attack, which could be felt at least nine miles away, was carried out by Israel and aimed to "raise the morale of terrorist groups" which the government maintains are waging war against President Bashar Assad's forces.

Israeli air strikes have hit an arms depot operated by the Lebanese Hezbollah group near Damascus airport, Syrian opposition sources told Al Jazeera.

He told army radio: "The incident corresponds completely with Israel's policy to prevent Iran's smuggling of advanced weapons to Hizbollah".

The Reuters news agency said intelligence sources believe the targeted depot handles a significant volume of weapons sent by air from Iran, a key ally of Mr Assad.

'Naturally, I don't want to elaborate on this'.

"Every time we receive intelligence information on plans to transfer advanced weaponry to Hezbollah, we will act", the minister added.

"Hours before the blasts, which took place at 3:25 A.M., two Iranian 747 cargo planes, an Iranian Ilyushin il-76 and a Syrian Ilyushin il-76 landed in Damascus, according to the flight radar tracking site Flightradar24.com", Haaretz reported.

Later Thursday, Israel's military said its Patriot missile defense system struck a drone that had entered Israeli airspace from Syria over the Golan Heights.

Israel has repeatedly warned against "game-changing" weapons reaching Hezbollah from Syria, which along with Iran supports the militant group.

The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned Israel's Ambassador to Moscow last month to protest about a different Israeli military strike in Syria, near the city of Palmyra.

The relations between Israel and Iran have been strained since the Iranian Revolution in the late 1970s.

It was not clear if it was a missile or an air strike, they said.

"It is playing this role in different forms; first, by direct aggression, particularly by using warplanes, artillery, or missiles against Syrian Army positions".

Israel and Syria are still technically at war, though the armistice line had remained largely quiet for decades until 2011 when the Syrian conflict began.
