Israeli strikes hit arms depot near Damascus airport

Meanwhile, a senior Syrian official threatened that his country would respond to the alleged Israeli strike on a Hezbollah-operated weapons hub near the Damascus airport.

By its part, the Syrian Foreign Ministry denounced another air strike by Turkey in the north-east of the country that left a toll of dozens of civilian casualties, media reports said.

Several large explosions have reportedly occurred in the vicinity of Damascus airport, triggering a large fire, according to Syrian media.

Russia, whose forces are helping President Bashar al-Assad fight Islamic State and other militant groups, regularly says it is the only foreign power operating on Syrian territory at the Syrian government's invitation and has spoken out strongly against Turkish strikes as well as a recent US strike. "Naturally, I don't want to elaborate on this".

"He told an Army radio that", The incident that took place in Syria abides by Israel's policy to stop the smuggling of weapons from Syria to Hezbollah in Lebanon by Iran".

The Lebanese militant group's Al-Manar television said the raid hit a warehouse and fuel tanks, without specifying whether they were its own or belonged to the Syrian army or another of its allies.

The explosion "shook the Damascus International Airport area at dawn today".

Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Observatory, said the blast could be heard throughout the Syrian capitol and woke up many residents at around 3:20 AM.

Yisrael Katz wouldn't comment directly on the strike Thursday morning but said "it absolutely matches our declared policy, a policy that we also implement".

It was not clear if it was a missile or an air strike, they said.

Hezbollah fighters have openly fought in Syria on behalf of President Bashar al-Assad since 2013.

Israel generally neither confirms nor denies involvement in such attacks.

But last month, it said it had carried out several strikes near the Syrian desert city of Palmyra, targeting what it said were "advanced weapons" belonging to Hezbollah.

Israel largely stays out of the complicated conflict next door, although the border region is restive and authorities have retaliated to occasional stray rockets with reprisals.

In January a series of explosions ripped through the al-Mazzeh military airport on the western outskirts of Damascus. There were several strikes near the same base previous year.

Hezbollah is a staunch ally of the Syrian government, which is mired in a six-year-long civil war, and also an avowed enemy of Israel, which occupied Lebanon for almost two decades.

Israel has carried out similar attacks in the past.
