Lawsuit filed to preserve Confederate statue in New Orleans

On Sunday, May 7th, New Orleans activist group Take Em Down NOLA organized a celebration and march to the Robert E. Lee monument in support of the removal of confederate monuments.

"We now have some documents that I believe will make a difference and show that City Park, as an incorporated association under the lieutenant governor's office, owns the land that the monument is on, and owns the monument", Marksbury said in front of the 15-foot sculpture.

SC removed the Confederate flag from its statehouse grounds in 2015, and several Southern cities have since considered removing monuments.

"If that monument is removed, then they (the city) would open themselves up to some legal action", said Marksbury, who is a member of the Monumental Task Committee, a volunteer group that works to preserve monuments in New Orleans. Statues of Beauregard, Gen. Robert E. Lee and Confederate President Jefferson Davis are to be removed soon.

Carmody's proposal would ban removal of any plaque, statue or other monument commemorating a historic military figure or event, unless voters agree in an election.

The city plans on removing three remaining Confederate monuments.

In the flux and reinvention of many big American cities, much goes under the bulldozer's blade; no one is suggesting that fate for these monuments, which, especially in the case of the Lee statue, are resonant for many New Orleanians.

The NOPD plans to close several streets and shut down the streetcar line due to planned demonstrations for and against the three remaining Confederate monuments Sunday.

The group said it was working to "remove all symbols to white supremacy from the landscape of New Orleans with as a necessary part of the struggle toward racial and economic justice", according to a statement posted on its Facebook page on Monday.

A protester advocating for the preservation of Confederate monuments in New Orleans holds Confederate battle flags, Sunday, May 7, 2017, in New Orleans.

The judge in that suit was expected to rule by late Monday whether to block immediate removal of the Beauregard statue.

On the other side: Supporters of the monuments who argue they honor Southern heritage and history.

Last month, amid security threats, contractors wearing masks and tactical vests worked in the dark of the night to remove that monument. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
