Million With Pre-Existing Conditions Could Be Hit Hard Under GOP Plan

Million With Pre-Existing Conditions Could Be Hit Hard Under GOP Plan

As a local health care practitioner, I am privy to the changes in health care needs and quality of health care access of my community.

Sens. Rob Portman and Pat Toomey have been trying to strike a compromise that bridges disagreements between Republican moderates who want to keep Medicaid expansion and conservatives who want to rapidly eliminate it and rein in spending. It describes the GOP's American Health Care Act as a "disastrous health care repeal bill" that is opposed by the American Medical Association, the AARP, and the American Cancer Society.

Reuters reported that about a dozen Republican governors, led by Gov. John Kasich of OH, are pushing their own proposal crafted in February. Then, we are right back where we were when it became necessary to create the Affordable Care Act. Above is just a summary of some of the main goals of this act but the one I will focus on in this article is the impact that the act will have on OTC medications, as they play a significant role in pharmacy and overall self-care. Because the American Health Care Act still requires insurers to offer coverage to all patients, people with pre-existing conditions would not be flat-out denied coverage, but it is highly probable that insurance companies would drastically increase their premiums if they are legally permitted to do so. They included Republican Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler of Camas and Republican Rep. Dave Reichert of Auburn. "I wanted to take the opportunity to set the record straight on a few of the false claims that my office is hearing and help explain this important bill to fix our broken healthcare system", she said in a issued statement. Unfortunately, Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers of the Colfax area is part of GOP leadership and went along with the repeal-and-replace charade. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell are digging in to fight against the House plan. The problems with Obamacare, which have come to light after several years, all relate to the free market aspects of insurance companies raising rates and not wanting to cover certain mostly smaller markets.

As a general rule, younger people would save money under the plan, while older people would pay more. Warren is faulting Republicans for blocking Democrats from negotiations on the Senate version of a healthcare overhaul bill. However, the bill faces a hard path through the Republican-controlled state Senate, and economists have conflicting views on how it would affect spending and taxation. We are at a point where doing nothing is no longer an option. Relying on them to insure more people has not.
