Nissan Signal Shield concept blocks your phone connection

Nissan Signal Shield concept blocks your phone connection

A spokesman for the RAC commented: "The Nissan Signal Shield is a good example of a technology that can help drivers be phone smart". And few things are more distracting than the buzzing, glowing little screens we carry in our pockets.

Nissan happily admits drivers could achieve a similar effect by simply switching their phone off, but given that statistics indicate phone use behind the wheel is on the rise, this is a decision few would seem to be making. Nissan's own research found nearly one in five drivers (18%) admitted to having texted behind the wheel. Some people flick their device to flight mode, and there are plenty of apps to automatically reply to incoming messages with a predetermined response while driving. Created in 1838, Faraday Cages block electric fields. The device will maintain wired connectivity even when in the Nissan Signal Shield compartment. Since it's a signal blocker, once the handset is placed inside this block, no cellular, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi signals will be able to go through.

Locking the phone away doesn't render it completely useless.

Nissan told CNNTech its concept is better than just turning off your phone, because you can still listen to music through a plugged in USB or auxiliary connection while your phone is in the compartment.

To combat that, Nissan Great Britain announced today it's testing an idea that it hopes will put an end to phone-based distractions in the driver's seat.

We've all seen it. Who would have known it could be used to block so much information? So the likelihood of such drivers exercising enough self control to lock their phone away for the duration of a vehicle trip in the first place probably isn't high.

With all attempts to stop drivers from using their smart devices while around the wheel, we love the idea of auto manufacturers taking a stand.

"This is about delivering more control at the wheel, not less". Nissan GB has adopted a technology that's nearly 200 years old to create a concept solution for reducing smartphone distraction at the wheel.

Nissan GB MD, Alex Smith, said: "for those who struggle to ignore the beeps and pings, this concept provides a simple solution in this very 'connected" world we live in'.
