North Korea Conducted Missiles Test -- Here's Why You Should Care

North Korea said Monday that its long-range ballistic missiles, tested with stunning success over the weekend, can reach the US mainland carrying a nuclear warhead.

A reliable missile must endure at least 10 successful test launches, according to Professor Chae Yeon-seok at South Korea's University of Science & Technology.

North Korea boasted early Monday that the latest launch was personally supervised by leader Kim Jong Un.

Pyongyang said the new weapon - called the Hwasong-12 - was capable of carrying a "heavy nuclear warhead".

"With the missile impacting so close to Russian soil - in fact, closer to Russia than to Japan - the president can not imagine that Russia is pleased", the statement added.

Although outside experts see several places where North Korea is likely stretching the truth, the missile launched Sunday appears to be the most powerful the country has ever tested. On Monday, North Korea, bragged that it successfully launched this new rocket.

The comments by ambassador to Beijing Ji Jae-Ryong were the first official response by the North to Moon's triumph last week, except for a four-paragraph dispatch by the official Korean Central News Agency two days after the vote.

KCNA cited Kim as saying the North would never succumb to what it called the "highly ridiculous" United States strategy of "militarily browbeating only weak countries and nations which have no nukes".

Speaking to reporters ahead of a closed-door meeting of the 15-member U.N. Security Council on the missile launch, Haley made clear that Washington would only talk to North Korea once it halted its nuclear program.

The United Nations has condemned North Korea for its latest ballistic missile launch.

The rocket, "newly designed in a Korean-style", flew 787 kilometers (490 miles) and reached a maximum altitude of 2,111 kilometers (1,310 miles), the North said, and "verified the homing feature of the warhead under the worst re-entry situation and accurate performance of detonation system".

New South Korean President Moon Jae-In sent his envoy to China, Germany, States, Japan and Russian Federation to discuss his policies when it comes to North Korea.

Ju Yong Choi said US' criticism of it was a "wanton violation of the sovereignty and dignity of the DPRK [Democratic People's Republic of Korea]".

There's also a political victory for North Korea.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspects a Hwasong-12 in an undated photo released by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Monday.

North Korea says the missile can carry a heavy nuclear warhead. Given speculation over the past months about the possibility of military action by the Trump administration to prevent Pyongyang from acquiring such weapons, the possible testing of ICBM subsystems in this low-key manner may be a North Korean hedge against the possibility of such action.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday the North's latest missile test was risky, but warned against attempts to "intimidate" Pyongyang. That would require a flight of 8,000 km (4,800 miles) or more and technology to ensure a warhead's stable re-entry into the atmosphere.
